A popular French bakery brand has issued a recall of some chocolate-and-hazelnut-filled brioches over concerns they may pose a choking hazard.

The product is sold by a number of UK retailers including Asda, Tesco and Ocado.

It is unclear how the plastic ended up in the brioches. The BBC has contacted Brioche Pasquier for comment.

As well as posing a choking hazard, pieces of plastic can cause damage to the digestive system if ingested.

The potential presence of the plastic pieces had made the product "unsafe to eat", the FSA warned.

Only Pitch Chocolate filled 225g (6x37.5g) packs with the batch code UK 034 are under the recall.

Consumers who have bought the affected product are advised not to eat the brioches and to contact the brand's customer care team via their wesite or by emailing [email protected].

The batch code and expiry date can be found on the back of the pack.

Brioche Pasquier said no other batch code, nor any of its other products, had been affected.

Food products are recalled when there is a potential risk to safety.

On Friday, food manufacturer Danone recalled batches of its Aptamil and Cow & Gate baby formula products over concerns they contain a toxin that made them unsafe for babies to drink.
