INDIANAPOLIS -- Indiana Pacers star point guard Tyrese Haliburton made a fadeaway 3-pointer while being fouled and completed the four-point play with 3.4 seconds left to stun Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks 115-114 on Tuesday night.
Haliburton ran along the left sideline, took an inbounds pass from Andrew Nembhard and launched a 3 while falling out of bounds, absorbing contact by Antetokounmpo, and the ball found the net with Haliburton sprawled on the floor in the corner.
After Haliburton made the free throw for a one-point lead, Antetokounmpo raced up the court and got off a clean 3-point try, but the shot fell short at the buzzer.
Haliburton said the play design that got him the 3-pointer is something they've run a lot in late-game situations, but it's the first time he's made the shot in a game.
"It's kind of, obviously, like a football play, you know, it's kind of like our version of four verts," Haliburton said. "The first time we ever ran it in training camp maybe two years ago I'd made the shot the same way, and I haven't made it since. Never got the ball since or made it since."
He made it this time. It was just the fifth regular-season instance of a team converting a four-point play while down three in the final 10 seconds of a game in the play-by-play era (since 1997-98), according to ESPN Research.
"What a play at the end. What a shot," Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said. "And [Pacers Hall of Famer] Reggie Miller's in the building. You gotta feel like that gave us a little bit of good fortune as well."
The victory also drew the Pacers even with the fourth-place Bucks in the Eastern Conference standings.
Haliburton, who had missed the previous three games with a hip injury, finished with 14 points and 10 assists. Pascal Siakam led Indiana with 25 points and 12 rebounds, and Bennedict Mathurin added 17 points.
Brook Lopez scored a team-high 23 points for the Bucks, and Antetokounmpo tallied 19 points and 17 rebounds.
Indiana led 103-93 with 8:08 remaining in the contest, but Milwaukee responded with a 10-0 run and tied the score on a 3-pointer by Gary Trent Jr. Neither team led by more than five after that.
The Pacers will face the Bucks again in Milwaukee on Saturday to conclude the season series.
